A past President of the Royal College of Surgeons (2011-2014), Professor Williams is a renowned consultant colorectal surgeon and a leader in the field of bowel disorders. He is Professor of Surgery at Barts the The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Honorary Consultant at Barts Health and Director of the National Centre for Bowel Research and Surgical Innovation. He has a long track record of collaborating with industry to develop instrumentation for innovative surgical procedures. He became a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2004, a member of the RCS Council in 2005 and was Chairman of the RCS's Research and Academic Board. He was President of the Society of Academic and Research Surgery, President of the International Surgical Group, President of the Ileostomy Association (a national patient support group) and Vice-Chairman of the British Journal of Surgery. He was a founding trustee of Bowel & Cancer Research, a charity that he chaired for many years. Most recently he chaired the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges' Working Group on 7 day Consultant Present Care and a multi-disciplinary taskforce to examine the effects of the implementation of the European Working Time Directive on the NHS. He also co-chaired a review on the request of the Secretary of State on the Statute of Duty of Candour as applied to healthcare providers.
